Question
Read the Case Study base on Dirty Dairying and answer the following question:
Many farmers only started meeting fencing and planting standards when the alternative was to not be able to sell the milk their cows produced. Should they be regarded as behaving ethically now that they are meeting the standards?
Answer
In the given case, it is mentioned that the farmers were not willing to resort to the conservative ways and wanted to handle the problem in their rural manner. They believed that the cost of the new water system was high and uneconomical for them. However, only when the milk purchasing company Fonterra announced that they would not buy milk from those farms, which were not following the environmental friendly rules, than the farmers, started to take action.
Currently the situation is under hand and the farmers have adopted the means of fencing a planting that help to maintain the quality of the water bodies and not deteriorate it further (Bowie 2017). However, this act cannot be considered as an ethical behaviour. It is agreed that they are now following all the norms which are essential for the protection of New Zealand`s image as a haven on earth, they are acting on selfish motive.
Ethics on the other hand is doing activates that will result in the good for others and society as a whole. It does not provide a room for selfish motives. The selfish acts and motives need to be kept aside while engaging in dealings, which are ethical.
In the given case, the farmers took up the act so that they could sell milk and earn money. Had the company not taken the move, the farmers would not have adopted to the better ways. Even now, in case the company removes the legislation, the farmers would go back to the old ways (Ferrell and Fraedrich 2015).
According to the Categorical Imperative, the theory of Kant, if everyone as selfish and planned for their own good then the society would not last long. Everyone would do his or her own act without considering the other person. Therefore, selfishness kills the greater good and cannot be termed as ethical.
