In this article it is discussed with research study, that whether a company’s profitability is increased by the application of Total Safety Management (TSM) or not. TSM helps in increasing profitability by decreasing accident/incident rate, adopting best safety practices and increase in productivity. Even though this concept is new in Nigerian construction companies, still its demand is increasing due to inherent long term benefits. TSM involves all levels of employees by making them responsible for developing a safe working culture along with continuous improvement in class and productivity of the company and overcome the traditional approach of creating safe working environment without considering the behavioral and intentional characteristic of all individuals.
Two types of safety indicators “Leading” and “Lagging” are used at different construction sites to measure the safety standards. In case of leading, safe working behavioral aspects are calculated, whereas in lagging, merely the statistics of accidents/incidents occurred are tracked and monitored. But these traditional approaches has few lacunas like, the construction companies keep on investing money to make the conditions better by only considering the old historical data, workers normally are encouraged to hide any accident/incident data reporting to improve the safety standard of the site and workers also don’t get any enthusiasm or obligation to work safely. As a result, the actual sense of safety management is diluted hence companies are bound to implement TSM to involve personal, behavioral and cultural components in all levels of employees.
The objective of the research conducted by Dr. M.O. Agru form Niger Delta University, was to ascertain the extent of implementation and influence of TSM in six well recognized construction companies (Julius Berger, Setraco, Fourgerolle, Arab-Contractors, Dantata-Sawoe and Costain) in Nigeria by using “Ken Wilber’s Integral Safety Model”. It considered that mixture of “Intension”, “Behavior”, “Culture” and “Process” aspects can improve safety standards. To conduct survey, three different questionnaires were developed, that upto what extent does your company: a) Implement TSM in work, b) performance improved by implementing TSM and c) performance depend on TSM implementation. Now, after providing a brief above explanations to all six companies, inputs were obtained from total 40,568 workers of three different categories (supervisor, foreman and workman). A sample of 396 workers of different categories were considered on the basis of 5% level of significance by using “Taro Yamane’s formula”. The responses of questionnaire were analyzed, tabulated and interpreted.
On the basis of above analysis and tabulation, it was concluded that the better performance of an organization, was depended on the implementation of TSM in execution of construction activities at all six Nigerian construction companies.
On the basis of all responses received and analysis, some recommendations were suggested for all construction companies in Nigeria are, team building gatherings must be done to achieve behavioral and attitudinal change towards safety, “leading” indicators must be used in safety management, to identify hazards related to workplace an operational level safety circle must be formed, aggressive safety awareness sessions must be conducted, safety trainings to entire workforce must be provided, high motivation level of all employees at work sites must be maintained, top management must be fully committed towards implementing safe working practices, to eliminate hazards continuous safety audits of workplace and equipment must be held, penalties for defaulters and daily toolbox talk must be implemented and regular review of safety policies must be done to accommodate changes in working environments.
