Question:
Reflect on the social and cultural factors which have shaped your views of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their health. Consider influences such as mass media, personal experiences and any literature, which may have shaped your views. Comparisons of indigenous peoples from other countries may inform your descriptions and you may decide to include some discussion of similarity that might be experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Consider the following points when constructing your assignment:
reflect on how your personal views of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been shaped
describe family and/or personal history influences on your perceptions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
Answer:
I understood the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the native people of Australia who live in the Torres Strait area. While visiting Australia, I made a friend who said he was a Torres Strait Islander. As I already had an idea of the Torres Strait Islanders, I assumed that he was from Torres Strait area. When I enthusiastically asked him about his life in the islands, he laughed at me saying that he never visited Torres Strait. Observing the surprised look in my face, he explained that Torres Strait Islanders refer themselves according to their home island even though they were born and brought up in the mainlands of Australia. I had limited knowledge about the peoples of that island, and from him I learned that people from Torres Strait are quite attached to their originality. In our short time together, I developed an interest in the people of Torres Strait, which lead me to further study on them.
It is a common notion among us that the Aboriginal people all over the world are the victim of social discrimination. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experience lower standards of life in every aspect. Health is a major concern among these people as their death rate is twice more than the non-indigenous Australians (Parker & Milroy, 2014). Cancer and heart diseases are the major cause of death in all over Australia. However, for the Aboriginal people, accidents, assaults, mental health, respiratory and nutrition issues add to that list. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a distinct culture of their own, which make them feel secluded from other Australians. As a result of this social seclusion, many social issues such as racism, verbal abuse and bullying occur. My friend told me that he himself experienced racism in most part of his life. People avoided him and refused to be acquainted with him. This developed anxiety and depression in him. I felt this is even a broader issue than only mental health. Torres Strait Islander peoples experience racism in every sector of life such as education, health care, workplace and housing. Therefore, they do not get the opportunity to utilize the resources to get proper education, medication for their health and jobs to support the family financially. Thus, they are exposed to several health issues and mental disorders. Moreover, the social discrimination retains them from getting the treatment that they need. The work of Parker and Milroy (2014) gives us the idea that social inequality effects the equal distribution of resources and access to those resources that the Torres Strait Islander people need for the wellbeing of their children. This is evident in the infant mortality rate of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, which is more than twice the rate among non-indigenous people in Australia.
Lowe and Yunkapotra (2013) argue the claim of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) that it intends to construct a curriculum that helps the students to understand the histories and cultures of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The findings of their research clearly suggests that there is lack in the will and intention in ACARA to improve the curriculum in order to reduce social discrimination and racism. This struck, to me, as a major lack of concern from the part of the government of Australia.
I found that the culture of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people does not recognise the risk in smoking tobacco (Condon et al., 2013). The lower literacy rate also prevents them from understanding the consequence of smoking. Therefore, they suffer from cancer and tuberculosis more than the indigenous people of Australia. Moreover, the cultural beliefs and traditions affect their comprehension of cancer and tuberculosis (Davidson et al., 2013). They think that cancer is the spiritual punishment and thereafter, do not try to cure it. They do not even have the idea that tuberculosis and, in many cases, cancer are curable.
This gave me the thought of broadening my area of studies. I wanted to know the health scenario of the indigenous people from different areas. Smylie and Firestone (2016) gave me insight of the Canadian culture. Even in Canada, there are health issues among the indigenous people, and those are the results of similar social factors such as social inclusion, lower rate of income and social discrimination. As per Ware (2013), accessibility to the resources due to cultural and social factors are the major cause of the growing health issues of the indigenous people across the world.
