Answers:

What do I hope to achieve by the end of the Master of Public Health program?
Public health is a branch of health sciences which deals with a holistic approach to the protection and promotion of health of people and communities (Baum, 2016). Public health ensures that the human population uses preventive measures to curb most of the challenges people face in their day to day lives (Frumkin, 2015). Public health is a wide branch that deals with promotion of health in so many ways. Most of the public health approaches are applied in the form of preventive or promoter measures such as prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases, prevention of gender based violence, prevention of health disparities and promotion of health seeking behavior (Brownson, 2017). All in all, public health ensures that people and the community at large are able to lead a fulfilling and healthy life.
At the end of my Master of Public Health, I hope to broaden my knowledge on various public health practices and fields. I hope to come up with better preventive and promoter practices that will ensure that people and the community lead quality lives. Currently we are faced with so many issues such as the rise in cancers, increased environmental pollution, gender based violence and unhealthy lifestyle practices, which in turn have reduced our life span. As a public health practitioner it is my hope that I will make a difference in my line of practice that will promote better life outcomes (Frumkin, 2015).
Why is public health important to me?
Public health is important to me because it is a dynamic and evolving field of practice. Change is inevitable and constant, new problems arise daily and as a public health practitioner is should be able to come up with strategic measure to solve these problems (Rosen, 2015). It is because of public health that the general population is educated about various forms of diseases and preventive measures for those diseases. Public health has played a role in the prevention of deadly diseases through awareness of vaccination against such diseases (DiClemente, 2018). It is the work of a doctor to diagnose and cure diseases but it is the work of a public health practitioner to ensure that the population is made aware of those ailments and their preventive measures.
It is my joy to see people access quality and universal health care worldwide. Public health enables me educate my family members, my friends, and the community at large about upcoming health issues and ways of preventing them and in return living quality and fulfilling lives. As a public health practitioner I will be able to make a lasting impression on people’s lives and increase their life expectancy.
What have you learnt from your work experience?
In my work as a public health practitioner I have learnt that people are different and dynamic. There is no equality when it comes to distribution of resources; however, there are alternatives to the disparities of resource distribution among people. Take for instance a person living in well up countries to the one living in the third world countries. The one living in well up countries has access to better medical care compared to that living the third world country.
A new approach to a complex problem
Gender based violence is a common problem affecting both genders, which can either be physical violence or emotional abuse (García-Moreno, 2015). Gender based violence is perpetuated by social norms, and gender stereotypes which vary from community to community. Prevention of this problem should start early in a person’s life where by children are taught the importance of respecting the opposite gender and treating everyone equally regardless of their gender or what the community says about the roles of each gender. Also these roles should be respected because we all need each other for survival. Victims of gender based violence should be encouraged to come out and not feel inferior or ashamed of what happened to them and the negative effects of gender stereotypes and social norms should be taught publically to help prevent this issue.
Describe a situation where you got people to work together
During my practice I noticed that the health seeking behavior of the well off and homeless were different. I was able to talk to a team of doctors nurses and other medical personnel and together we organized a free medical camp targeting the homeless. Through the medical camp I was able to educate the homeless on the importance of seeking health care and free medical care was availed to them in terms of diagnostic and therapeutic measures.
