1. The text states, “Nurses have not always been taught how to use the media as a health promotion tool” (Mason, 2016, p. 135). Describe how you, as a doctorally-prepared nurse, can use the media to effect change, promote health, or influence policy.It is accurate that we, as nurses, have not always been taught how to use the media as a health promotion tool. I don’t recall having a discussion about this at all in my undergraduate or master’s programs. I did find the readings very interesting, specifically regarding how Barrack Obama harnessed the power of social media in order to get his message across to millions. The media can be a very powerful tool which can affect one’s image both negatively and positively.2. (This question does not require references) In your experience as a nurse, have you found that most people understand what we as nurses do? What APRNs do? What DNPs do? Please share a story about your experience (can be a positive story or a negative story).
Answer:
1. According to my point of view, after critically reading and evaluating the first posting, I learnt that social media is regarded as one of the most powerful tools in order to promote health. I could also figure out that the advent of social media to promote healthcare although had emerged long back but had not been able to gain a lot of popularity comparing the recent trends. The most obvious reason for the same could incorporate the lack of imparting the concept of social promotion at the graduate and the undergraduate level of nursing studies. However as highlighted by (Turale,2015), it must be noted that social networking sites like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are powerful tools that help in spreading awareness about the current trends in the health sector and helps in targeting a wider audience strength which was the main agenda of the Obama campaign.
2. The next posting highlights the underlying difference between physicians and nursing professionals whose duties are misunderstood most of the times and as a result the nursing professionals face a tough time explaining the underlying difference between the distinct job responsibilities of a primary care physician and that of a nurse. Many a times, there have been instances when patients have humiliated the nursing staff and said mean things like was it because of the poor grades that they could not head to the medical university and many a times patients remark mean things like, they sought care from a physician and not a nurse. Even due to lack of awareness, many a times, parents and other dear ones fail to understand the difference in the weightage of different nursing degrees. Hence, it is exceedingly important to get accustomed to the changes occurring in the society and adopt measures to promote social health awareness, so that people can relate more with the concept of nursing care (Giger,2016).
