In any profession communication is important for establishing exchange of information between people which in turn ensure the workforce of the system. In health and social care settings, communication is very important to establish trust and perform service to people in need and uphold the value of the workplace. The healthcare and social service profession is influence the working conditions, like, variations in communication techniques, environmental barriers, language barriers and social barriers (Mitchell et al. 2012) The aim of this report is to reflect upon the factors these factors affecting effective communication and analyze a case study provided with respect to the discussion.
Environmental Factors:
Communication is affected by environmental factors like time, lighting, place, noise et cetra (O’Halloran Grohn and Worrall  2012). Service users regulars face problems and get startled when the environment setting is intimidating, by loud noises, bright lights et cetra.
Time: It is a very important factor which affects communication and influence the chance of proper communication.
Lighting: interpersonal communication is affected by lighting in harsh conditions. Lightings that are too hard or too bright tend to be intimidating to the person trying to communicate with a health or social worker. Comfortable faded lights provide the service users proper space for communication.
Place: this is also another factor that influences communication, proper place setting and space is necessary for effective communication. The service users needs to feel needed and not be intimidated
Noise: Sudden noises can break a flow of conversation between people. In health care and social setting it is important to provide space for the service users and sudden external noises can hamper their confidence to speak.
Physical Barriers:
Physical barriers in originate within the people involved in the communication process where their own physical disability hampers the communication like, sensory deprivation and physical or mental health (Lunenburg 2010). Service users find it difficult to verbally or non-verbally express themselves with physical disability.
Sensory deprivation: This kind deprivation may affect a person’s ability to speak, see or hear.
Physical and Mental Health: This factor is very important to effective communication as the both parties involved need to be physically able to converse and mental prepared to understand the focus issue of the communication (Fellinger 2012).
Language Barrier:
This factor is another very important factor that influences the effect of communication between service providers and service users. Effective communication will be fruitful only when both parties involved will be able to understand what the other person is trying to express. The process is more affected when one party communicates via professional jargons, slangs which the other party fails to understand.
Social isolation:
Many incidents can take place with a person that might render them to live in isolation. This affects the method of communication, as the person in unable to express their issue. Traumatic accidents, abusive or violent past might lower the confidence of the person (Nicholson 2012).
Measures to Overcome Communication Barriers:
This is an effective way to reduce the barrier in communication, by choosing the correct method of communication with respect to the service users being dealt with, communication gaps can be reduced. Like in case of elderly, being patiet while communicating and while communicating with people with disability of speaking, using sign language (Fellinger 2012). The four techniques of communication are – interpersonal, verbal, non-verbal and written communication. Environmental and physical barriers can be minimized with interpersonal communication or written communication if time and place is the barrier.
Preferred Language:
Selection of the correct language during communication with a service users is very important, to make them feel more comfortable and giving confidence in times of need (Pinheiro 2011). If there is any language barrier, then using interpreters or technology based applications can be utilised for translating unknown language. Environmental and language barriers can be overcome by selecting a language appropriate for the location and profession.
Environmental Adaptation:
The person providing care services needs to mould the environment in which they want to set up the communication, to make the service users feel comfortable and address the issue in focus. This can be done by letting a person in relation to the service users be present while the communication process is taking place (Haworth and Ashton 2009). This can be done by improving the environmental barriers like light, minimized external noise, engaging in interpersonal communication. This benefits to help socially isolated service users overcome and people with physical disabilities.
Effective Non-verbal Communication:
This is a very important aspect of interpersonal communication, where the care attendant acknowledges as well as provides facial and physical cues as well as gestures to meet the distance between the attendant and the service users (Haworth et al. 2010). This kind of communication benefits service users to overcome, physical barrier, like speech disability in service users as well helps overcoming language barriers.
Adapting to the Environment:
This kind of adaption is very important to overcome physical as well as environmental barriers. The support system for Jacqui should be set up in such a way that environmental barrier can be overcome by adding comfortable lighting to the rooms she uses, and minimise external noise. This would help her find confidence and engage in effective communication. The preferred method of communication will also enhance the process. It is very important to build a trustworthy relationship with the service users, this can be done by adapting to the environment the service users is used to being. Establishing a friendly gesture, polite facial expressions, having good listening skills and speaking in soft tone benefits the environmental adaptation.
Non-Verbal Communication:
The nursing staff have to address the physical barrier Jacqui has while communication with her and use appropriate method of communication, like non-verbal and interpersonal methods of communication. Makaton symbols can be used to help her communicate (Fellinger 2012). It is also to be kept in mind that attention is paid to facial expressions and gestures while communicating verbally. Warm and friendly expressions as well as calm body posture benefits the service user, Jacqui. Jacqui is a lady so; should be treated in a respectful manner.
Preferred method of communication:
The method of communication selected should be such that Jacqui is comfortable and is not intimidated, which will hamper her process to learn (Pinheiro 2011). Training should be focussed around her and teach her how to indicate when she wants something. Using appropriate language benefits Jacqui to understand and communicate.
Preferred Language:
The selection of language should be in accordance to the person the care is provided for. In the case study, Jacqui is a native English speaking girl, so the choice of language should be English.
