The environment affects children differently than adults. Because their bodies are still growing, children are at greater risk if they are exposed to environmental contaminants. Contaminants are anything that can cause something to become unclean, polluted, or not pure. They can be found anywhere and some are unsafe. A toddler playing in dirt contaminated with high levels of lead can become sick from lead poisoning. A child with asthma playing outside when the air quality is bad may have an asthma attack.
Task:
Describe two external stressors that are unique to adolescents.
Discuss what risk-taking behaviors may result from the external stressors and what support or coping mechanism can be introduced.
Answer:
Adolescent pregnancy leads to development of anemia, depression, inadequate weight gain and delayed prenatal care. Moreover, the infant would also experience low birth weight, preterm birth and there are risks of pre and post neonatal mortality that is higher chance of death of infants. There are risks for the infant including congenital malformation and inadequate cognitive growth as well (Kawakita et al., 2016). On this context the risk factors of the adolescent pregnancy are drug and alcohol abuse, victim of child sexual abuse, lack of knowledge about intercourse and contraception, lack of education, having intercourse in young age and also lack of future insights (Rashidi Fakari et al., 2017).
According to government data it has been seen that in 2017 among 1000 adolescent women of 15 to 19 year age group 18.8 births a year (HHS.gov, 2019). Moreover, this practice has been reduced by 7 per cent from the previous year that is 2016 (Cdc.gov, 2019). On this context it has been seen that the Hispanic (28.9 births per 1000, 15 to 19 year age group women) and black population (27.6 births per 1000, 15 to 19 year age group women) shown higher rates of adolescent pregnancy than the white population of the country (HHS.gov, 2019). However, the rate of adolescent pregnancy and birth rate from 2009 is reduced in a stable rate. Despite of this reduction the teen pregnancy issue is still higher in USA than Canada and United Kingdom (HHS.gov, 2019). OAH’s Pregnancy Assistance Fund (PAF) is focused on repeated pregnancy reduction among tribes and state population (HHS.gov, 2019). Moreover, OPA’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (TPP) also focused on the teen pregnancy prevention program (HHS.gov, 2019).
