Review Chapter, Crisis Intervention Strategies, focusing on how and why countertransference, secondary traumatic stress disorder, and vicarious traumatization occur. Also take note of the characteristics of each phenomenon, as well as the consequences that can occur when human services professionals experience them.
Review the article, “Emotional Exhaustion and Turnover Intention in Human Service Occupations: The Protective Role of Coworker Support,” paying particular attention to the factors and situations that lead to emotional exhaustion.
Reflect on the different settings in which human services professionals who specialize in crisis and intervention might work: domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, rape crisis centers, natural/human-made disaster aid centers, crisis/suicide hotlines, substance abuse rehabilitation facilities, or any other specific setting you have studied throughout this course. Choose one setting and consider the types of events and client interactions that might occur over time that could lead a human services professional within this setting to experience one of the following: countertransference, secondary traumatic stress disorder, or vicarious traumatization.
Consider the characteristics that a human services professional experiencing countertransference, secondary traumatic stress disorder, or vicarious traumatization within this setting might display. In addition, think about the consequences of this for both the human services professional and his or her clients.

Vicarious traumatization also called as compassion fatigue that occurs in counselors due to the exposure to the traumatic incidences or stories of the patients, or witnessing the fear, pain or the trauma that the survivors have faced with (Michalopoulos & Aparicio, 2012).
This discussion is based on the experience of health care professionals working in the substance abuse rehabilitation centers. In such work settings the health care professionals often have to deal with clients with psychotic problem due to substance abuse and mobilizing the community to address suicide or violence related to substance abuse is not an easy task (Rugulies et al., 2007). Caring for these people can be emotionally, physically and spiritually exhausting. Stress and burnout often occurs due to the excessive workload and less number of the roistered workforce (Borritz et al., 2006). Caregivers often have to face with unexpected mortality and the morbidity of the beloved patients. The depression and the sorrow of certain patients and the development of special attachment with patients can be depressing for the caregivers after they have left.
Three specific characteristics to be displayed by human service professionals suffering from vicarious traumatization
Sickness absence has been found to be the one of the characteristics displayed by the social care workers and it is one of the important predictor of the psychosocial adverse issues faced by the caregivers at the workplace (Ducharme et al., 2007).
Another consequence is free-floating anger or irritation, becoming irritated with the erratic behavior of the clients or being irritated with the peers.
Dreaming about the traumatic experiences of the clients (Michalopoulos & Aparicio, 2012). Caregivers working for severely traumatized patients can develop this disorder out of compassion or attachment with the patient or the traumatic story of certain patients can be unbearable to certain care giver.
Consequences
Vicarious trauma can affect the personal life of the care worker, such as the relationships with the family and the friends, as well as their physical and mental wellbeing. Furthermore, it can also impact on the performance of the counselor and errors in judgment (Michalopoulos & Aparicio, 2012). Medical errors can become common issue and as a result the patients would be deprived of treatment.
